What is a memecoin?

7 min read · Updated

A memecoin is a cryptocurrency whose value is built on shared culture rather than cash flows. That sounds dismissive until you notice the same is broadly true of most collectibles, and that some memecoins have outlived the products that mocked them.

How memecoins differ from utility tokens

  • No revenue model — the token does not capture fees from a protocol.
  • Supply is usually large and fully circulating from day one.
  • Community size and attention are the primary demand drivers.
  • Governance, if it exists at all, is social rather than contractual.

Why the big ones worked

DOGE survived because it built a genuinely friendly community with a decade of continuity. PEPE worked because the meme predated the token by fifteen years and needed no explanation. BONK and WIF worked because they arrived when their chains needed a mascot and distribution was wide from the start.

The pattern is recognisability plus wide initial distribution plus a community that runs itself. Not one of them was won by a whitepaper.

Mechanics that matter

  • Liquidity depth determines whether the chart is tradable or a trap.
  • Holder concentration determines how violent a drawdown can be.
  • Contract permissions determine whether the rules can change after you buy.

Honest risk framing

Most memecoins go to zero. The ones that do not usually had wide distribution, no privileged contract functions, and a community that survived at least one 80% drawdown. Nothing on this page is financial advice — always verify the contract address and do your own research.

Key takeaways

  • Memecoins trade on culture and attention, not cash flows.
  • Wide distribution and recognisability beat roadmaps.
  • Liquidity depth and holder concentration decide how it behaves under stress.
  • Assume high risk and verify contract permissions yourself.
